After he brought up that he wanted to marry me, looking at wedding rings was the only thing on my mind. He didn't seem to want to talk about it because it still was kind of soon, but in my mind he brought it up first so we should be planning the wedding! I would ask if he ever thought about buying a ring and what he thought it would be like, if he would take her and pick one out together, or if she would tell him which one to get, or if he would just do it on his own. He somehow skirted around the issue, so I was left not knowing what to do with the ring situation. I was looking them up online all the time, any down time on my phone, at work, literally all day long I was looking at rings. I had coworkers text me pictures of rings, sometimes I would be with him and would see the picture show up on my phone. I hid the message from him once and he got sad thinking I was keeping a secret from him. So I showed him and he just shook his head. Hahaha, hence the reason I was hiding it from you buddy.
One day I couldn't take looking online anymore, and just had to go to the mall to look at real rings. I had no idea how picking out my ring would go, but I had to just go look for my own sanity. It was a random Wednesday evening and I had nothing going on, so I went to the mall and as soon as I got there he called me and asked what I was up to. I told him I was at the mall and that I was probably going to go to the make up store and Bath and Body Works (which wasn't a lie because I really was going to go to those stores too!) He asked as soon as he heard that if he could call me back, which was weird because he called me, but whatever, didn't think too much of it.
I went into Kay Jewelers because... well, every kiss begins with Kay! And while I was there I told the lady the whole story. "We've been talking about getting married for a month, he kinda knows what ring I want (referencing the Charming Charlie date), he doesn't want to go ring shopping with me, he can't know that I'm here right now, maybe I'll tell his sister what ring I want..." and on and on. After I tried on 5 or 6 different rings he calls. My ringtone is a love song and his face is all big on my phone and I say, "OH, its him! He can't know I'm here!!!" So I left the store and told the lady I'd be right back.
He tells me I sound really happy.
"Did you go to Bath and Body Works?"
"Maybe!" (said in a playful way to avoid lying...)
"Where did you just come out of?"
"Oh.... just a clothing store" (I couldn't tell him I was in Kay's, and I didn't want to say a specific store because that would have been a lie... even though telling him I was in a clothing store was clearly not the truth either. I remember thinking... one day I'll tell him the truth about this story.)
"So where are you now?"
"Just in a common area on the benchs"
Looking back I should have known what was happening, but I couldn't have imagined what would happen next, so I thought he was just really interested in my mall trip.
He continues to talk about his day and how great it had been and what he'd done, neglecting to tell me a big part of his day including a night class on the Salt Lake BYU Campus. While we are chatting I look up and see a very attractive man walking toward me. "Are you here?!?!?!?!"
We hung up and hugged each other! He had surprised me with a visit to Salt Lake without me knowing he was coming! In all our 6 months of dating this had never happened! He had a class in Salt Lake and didn't tell me so he could surprise me.
He told me it was so hard to find me because I was so vague on the phone. He teased me about saying, "Oh... a clothing store" and then I hung my head down, because I knew I was caught.
"Its because I wasn't in a clothing store... I was in that store" (pointing to Kay's.)
He laughs so hard and puts his arm around me and walks with me into the ring store. I told the sales lady how I've been caught, and she continues our conversation like its not an issue. "So the good news is that ring you like can be done in Rose Gold, and the sale that starts next week applies to it..."
I felt like a kid caught red handed stealing candy from a candy store, I knew I shouldn't have done it but it felt so good! The sales lady handed me a pamphlet which he just took from me and said he got to take that. Then we left and he called me out for lying to him. I told him I didn't know how to tell him I was in a jewelry store, but was so glad that he caught me! There are no secrets between us, and now he knew exactly the ring I wanted. So it really was a win win!!!
And just in case you were wondering... we did end up going to Bath and Body Works together after that! :)
